A 28-year-old man fired a shot at his wife during an argument Tuesday afternoon in north suburban Waukegan, before driving away and leaving her, police said.

Joseph B. Smith, of Columbia, S.C., was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and DUI, according to Waukegan police.

Smith and his wife got into an argument near Belvidere Road and Lewis Avenue a few minutes after noon Tuesday, police said.

He pulled a gun and fired a shot in his wife’s direction, then drove off, police said.

Officers responded and took him into custody a short time later, police said. A loaded semi-automatic pistol was found on his front seat.

Smith is being held at the Lake County Jail on a $75,000 bond.
