Top 100 NFL player list has 3 Bears—not Forte, Cutler

This could be a long season for the Bears, and I don’t mean Kyle.

Pete Prisco, senior NFL columnist for CBS Sports, revealed his annual Top 100 NFL players on Tuesday.

Guess who the highest-rated Bear is? (While you work on that, I’ll fill you in on some of the other insights.)

Priso gives a lot more weight to quarterbacks than any other position. Five of the top 15 players throw the football, but not his top player. That’s reserved for J.J. Watt. Prisco writes:

The best player in 2014 in was Houston Texans defensive end/tackle J.J. Watt. That’s why he has the No. 1 spot in the Top 100, my annual ranking of the best players in the league. I didn’t vote for Watt as the league MVP last season, not when his defense was ranked in the middle of the pack and his team didn’t make the postseason. But there is no denying he is the best player. The reason is simple: He is so much better than anybody else at his position, while there is some debate at quarterback. There is none at defensive end/tackle.

Now, as for the top-rated Bears players? Has to be Matt Forte, right? No, he doesn’t crack the Top 100. (Prisco does not put a lot of value on running backs.) Neither does Jay Cutler.

No, the top-rated Bears players is newly acquired linebacker Pernell McPhee at No. 70. And, only two other Bears make the list—Kyle Long at No. 81 and Alshon Jeffrey at No. 99.

Getting back to the Forte snub, Prisco lists just three RBs in the Top 50—Le’Veon Bell at 23, Marshawn Lynch at 25 and DeMarco Murray at 41. As for Cutler, 11 QBs are in the Top 100.
