A man shot by police after officers saw him beating someone with a baseball bat early Monday on the Near North Side was ordered held on a $500,000 bond Tuesday.

Zainul Hussain, 25, is charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery for the attack in the 1500 block of North Clybourn, according to Chicago Police.

Officers working a CTA Special Employment beat were on patrol at 4 a.m. when a citizen told them there was a large fight going on in that block, according to a statement from police.

The officers responded and saw a man striking another male who was lying on the ground with a baseball bat, police said.

The officers told the man to drop the bat, and he continued striking the victim, police said. One of the officers discharged his weapon, striking the suspect.

Both men were taken to hospitals, but their conditions were not released. No officers were injured, and the bat was recovered, police said.

Hussain, of the 6300 block of North Hoyne Avenue, was ordered held on a $500,000 bond by Judge Donald Panarese Jr., court records show. He will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing July 27.
