Man charged with holding up Elgin convenience stores

A man is accused of robbing one Elgin convenience store but failing an attempt to hold up another this week in the northwest suburb.

About 11:20 a.m. Sunday, Nathan L. Johnson walked into a store in the 400 block of Bluff City Boulevard, implied he had a handgun, and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, according to Elgin police.

Johnson, a 24-year-old Elgin resident, tried to do the same thing about 3:50 p.m. Tuesday at a store in the 600 block of Dundee Avenue, but gave up and ran away when he couldn’t get the register open, police said.

Surveillance footage showed the same person robbed both stores, and police were able to get a description of the vehicle he was driving.

Officers tracked down the car nearby, and Johnson was arrested after a brief foot chase, police said.

He was charged with felony counts of aggravated robbery and attempted robbery, and ordered held on a $100,000 bond Wednesday, police said.
