Man, 61, found dead with stab wound in Hammond

A 61-year-old man was found dead with a stab wound to his chest Monday afternoon at his northwest Indiana home.

Joseph Gonzales was found unresponsive in his bed by his female roommate at their home in the 4400 block of Sheffield Avenue in Hammond just before 2 p.m., according to Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda.

Gonzales suffered a stab wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene at 3 p.m., according to the Lake County coroner’s office.

The roommate told investigators she last knew Gonzales was alive Sunday night, police said.

A ruling on manner of death is pending further investigation, authorities said.
