A southwest suburban man is facing a felony charge after a 77-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by an SUV Tuesday evening in south suburban Lansing.
Officers found Thomas A. Anderson lying on the side of the road about 5 p.m. near the intersection of Wentworth Avenue and Lake Street, about a block away from his home in the 3600 block of Randolph Street in Lansing, according to Lansing police and the Lake County coroner’s office.
Anderson was taken to Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana, where he died at 5:37 p.m., authorities said.
A witness saw a large, dark SUV strike Anderson, who was crossing the road, then continue north on Wentworth, police said.
Officers found a 2007 Ford Expedition matching the description unoccupied several blocks away from the crash scene with fresh damage to the front end.
The owner, 45-year-old David Lautenbach of Orland Park, was taken into custody for questioning. On Friday, police said he was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving death, a felony.
He was scheduled to appear in bond court Friday afternoon in Markham, but court information was not immediately available.
Any witnesses to the crash are asked to call the police at (708) 895-7150.
