The North Avenue pedestrian bridge over Lake Shore Drive will close Monday until late June to remove and replace the bridge deck and girders.

The North Avenue bridge will be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists from Monday until June 30, according to a statement from CDOT. Pedestrians and bicyclists are advised to use the underpass at LaSalle Street, about one block south of the bridge.

CDOT also announced temporary overnight lane closures on North Lake Shore Drive will begin April 18. Traffic will be reduced to two lanes one direction at a time between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.

The North Avenue pedestrian bridge was originally built in 1940 and the last major work done on it was in 1991, CDOT said.
