A small earthquake was reported in the northwest suburbs of Chicago just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake happened at 6:08 p.m. local time and measured 2.9 on the Richter scale, according to the USGS. It was centered about 1.2 miles west of Lake in the Hills.
Weak or light shaking was felt in parts of Crystal Lake, Lake in the Hills, Huntley, Union Woodstock, Wonder Lake and as far away as Elgin, according to the USGS website.
Most earthquakes with a magnitude between 2.0 and 3.0 do not typically cause damage, according to the USGS.
