A house in north suburban Vernon Hills caught fire when it was struck by lightning Sunday morning.

Following a thunderstorm about 9 a.m., a passerby noticed flames coming from the roof of the home in the 1700 block of Sawgrass Street, according to the Countryside Fire Protection District.

The person called 9-1-1 and alerted the people inside the home. Everyone got out safely by the time firefighters arrived, fire officials said.

Crews extinguished the fire shortly afterward.
