Phillips, the pride of the Public League, has several prospects to watch, including senior running back Craig Elmore. Elmore was a key factor in a victory Saturday against Simeon, rushing for 180 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Although Elmore is beginning to get recruiting interest, it’s not widespread yet.
‘‘I am mostly getting recruited as a running back, but I feel like I can play multiple positions,’’ said Elmore, a 5-9, 215-pounder. ‘‘I don’t like being looked at as a one-position player. Whatever the team needs, I can do it.
‘‘I feel like I jumped into a big role, being the leader of the team after Malcolm Fox and my brother [Chris] graduated. Just helping my team out when they need me on and off the field. It brings joy to my day, knowing I helped them get better. I would also say my speed took a huge leap from last year.
‘‘My game has progressed because everything else on the field moves a bit slower from last year. When I run the ball, I feel more confident that I won’t be caught from behind. When I am chasing after someone for a tackle, I feel that they won’t make it too far.’’
Thompson one to watch
Marist receiver Jadon Thompson, a 6-2, 160-pound sophomore, has had a strong start to the season. He has played a big part in the RedHawks’ offense.
‘‘I’ve been working on explosion and just giving my all every play and getting the job done for my teammates so they can get the job done, too,’’ Thompson said.
Recruiting hasn’t really started for Thompson, who’s hoping to have a breakout season.
‘‘My dream schools would be Ohio State, USC and UCLA,’’ Thompson said.
Thompson is an excellent athlete with a high ceiling. Expect him to start drawing plenty of recruiting attention.
Keegan update
Crystal Lake South’s Trevor Keegan has added a scholarship offer from Ore-
gon. He’s one of the top offensive linemen in the area and one of the top uncommitted seniors in the state.
Keegan, a 6-6, 310-pounder, also picked up a scholarship offer from Vanderbilt. He has received scholarship offers from most of the Big Ten schools and from a handful of Southeastern Conference and Big 12 schools.
