Week 3 of the Chicago area high school football season was not a kind one to teams ranked in the top five. Expect a major shakeup in the next edition of the Super 25 – set to be released on “Sun-Times Game Week” Monday afternoon – after a series of upsetsover the weekend handed losses to some of the top programs in the state.
No. 1 Lincoln-Way East stomped over Andrew, 42-0, but the teams directly behind them in the rankings all lost.As a result, expect teams like Batavia and Nazareth to move into the top five as they slide ahead of those who are no longer unbeaten. The same goes for the teams that pulled off the big upsets like No. 11 Barrington and No. 18 Mount Carmel.

Loyola’s last gasp falls short
It all came down to one play in Wilmette: Loyola had the ball at the 3-yard line with a chance to score a touchdown that would tie the game and set up a potential game-winning extra point. Instead, Mount Carmel’s Matt Lenti came up with the huge tackle to stop the Ramblers short of the end zone and put the stamp on an 18-12 victory for the Caravan. Here’s video of the final play:

Simeon shocks Phillips in Public League Super Bowl
This was one of those games circled on the calendar, and No. 20 Simeon proved ready for the big night with a shocking 21-8 victory over No. 4 Phillips, which had not lost a Public League game since 2013. A year after being shut out by Phillips, Simeon found ways to beat the defense with the multi-talented Alante Brown, who recorded 97 passing yards, 24 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards andone touchdown. The Wolverines also had four sacks as part of a stellar defensive effort.
“Nobody thought we could beat them but us,” Simeon coach Dante Culbreath said after the game. “I think people thought we could show up and play a good game. But not beat them the way we beat them.”
Maine South falls to Barrington
The Hawks’ first loss of the season came at the hands of Barrington, which scored its game-winning touchdown on a trick play that saw receiver Eric Darlington throw the game-winning pass. After rallying from down 10 to cut the deficit to 23-20, the Broncos pulled off the miraculous play that put them ahead for good in a 26-23 win.
