Man dead, boy in serious condition after double shooting in West Garfield Park

Two people were wounded, one of them fatally, in a shooting Friday night in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

About 10:30 p.m., 20-year-old Detavious Beeks and a 17-year-old boy were walking in the first block of North Karlov when another male approached them and opened fire, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Beeks was struck in his head, while the boy suffered a gunshot wound to the back, authorities said. They were both taken to Stroger Hospital, where Beeks was pronounced dead over two hours later and the boy was listed in serious condition.

Beeks lived in the same neighborhood as the shooting, the medical examiner’s office said.

As Area North detectives were investigating, the sound of gunfire from at least two nearby locations rang through the air.
