Off-duty police officer shoots man who nearly struck him with car in Waukegan: police

An off-duty officer shot a man who sped off from a traffic stop and nearly hit the officer Monday in north suburban Waukegan, according to police.

About 5:50 p.m., someone approached the uniformed officer about a suspicious vehicle that was in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2200 block of North Butrick Street, Waukegan police said.

The officer approached the vehicle, but the driver sped off and almost struck the officer, police said. He fired his pistol at the suspect, striking him at least once.

The 22-year-old was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is in custody, police said.

Police said the officer, an 18-year veteran at the department, was taken to a hospital for a precautionary exam and later released.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
