A man died Feb. 21, 2021, of complications from injuries he suffered in a crash weeks earlier.

A 20-year-old man who crashed into a semitrailer in December on Interstate 57 near suburban Posen has died from his injuries.

Lavel Wellington was pronounced dead at 2:39 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

On Dec. 9, he was driving a 2019 Hyundai Elantra on I-57 when he struck the back of a semi that was parked on the right shoulder near 147th Street, Illinois State Police said.

After the impact, the Elantra struck another semi in a construction zone, state police said.

An autopsy found Wellington died of complications from injuries he suffered in the crash, the medical examiner’s office said. His death was ruled an accident.
