INDIANAPOLIS — In what could go down as the defining moment of his preseason, Bears kicker Eddy Pineiro made a 58-yard field goal midway through the third quarter Saturday night.

In his first game as the Bears’ sole kicker — the team cut Elliott Fry six days earlier — Pineiro drove the long kick through the uprights with a few yards to spare. In the second quarter, he made a 21-yard field goal and an extra point.

The pressure was on Pineiro entering the game. He admitted last week that, despite outlasting Fry, he didn’t consider the starting job to be locked up. The Bears have said they wouldn’t hesitate to made a trade or waiver claim next week if they weren’t satisfied with their kicking situation.
