The truth can finally be told: “Jay Cutler was bad.”
So said former Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall on ESPN’s First Take Monday morning.
During a light-hearted exchange with host Stephen A. Smith, Marshall laid out Cutler’s weakness as a team leader, while acknowledging that he and Cutler are still friends.
“He can make every throw, he’s one of the smartest guys I’ve been around, but it come down to this heart right here and leadership.”
Marshall indicated how overly emotional Cutler could get in practice, while other quarterbacks he’s played with were more steady.
“You can’t be afraid to approach your quarterback or you can’t be afraid to mess up because your quarterback is going to crush you,” Marshall said, comparing the demeanor of Cutler to that of Drew Brees and Eli Manning.
“I love [former Jets quarterback] Ryan Fitzpatrick. He couldn’t throw like a Jay Cutler, but I’ll run through a wall for Ryan Fitzpatrick because he’s going to give me his all.”
