ATHLETICS 8, CUBS 7
For the record
St. Rita grad Tony Zych, the Cubs’ fourth-round draft pick last June, got a rare chance to pitch at the end of a big-league spring game when the team ran out of scheduled pitchers. He gave up the winning home run to A’s farmhand Yordy Cabrera.
Position watch
Infielder Blake DeWitt, who went from signing a $1.1 million deal to being outrighted off the 40-man roster in a three-week span, started making his case for a bench job with a three-run homer off Bartolo Colon in the second inning. DeWitt, batting as the DH, also walked. He’ll bat third and start at second base Tuesday.
Prospect watch
Josh Vitters, the third pick in the 2007 draft, was errorless in a start at third base. He also delivered a one-out RBI double to left field during the Cubs’ three-run fourth inning.
Right-hander Casey Weathers, a first-rounder the Cubs acquired from the Rockies in the Ian Stewart trade, induced two grounders and a pop-up for a 1-2-3 inning of relief in his debut.
On deck
Rockies (1-0) at Cubs (0-2), 2:05 p.m., 720-AM. Matt Garza, James Russell, Alberto Cabrera, John Gaub, Andy Sonanstine, Trever Miller, Casey Coleman and Esmailin Caridad are scheduled to pitch.
