Longtime Geneva resident found dead in creek at golf course

(GENEVA) Authorities continue to investigate the death of a longtime Geneva resident found dead last week at a west suburban golf course.

John A. Gaines, 74, was found about 1:30 p.m. Friday, lying facedown in a creek near the sixth hole of the Geneva Golf Club at 831 South Street, Geneva police said in a release.

Gaines, the husband of Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

An autopsy performed Monday did not rule on the cause or manner of his death pending further investigation, according to a statement from the Kane County Coroner’s office. Toxicological samples have been sent to a forensic laboratory for analysis.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading up to his death, and have not found any indication of foul play or criminal activity, police said previously.

The golf course was not open on Friday, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said.

Police and the Kane County Coroner’s office are investigating.
