Man charged with attacking women with hammer on lakefront path

A Streeterville man has been charged with attacking two suburban women with a hammer Tuesday night as they walked on the lakefront path near Navy Pier.

Jawaun Westbrook

Jawaun Westbrook, 28, faces two felony counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to Chicago Police.

The women, both 55, were walking on the bike path in the 500 block of North Lake Shore Drive about 6:30 p.m. when Westbrook walked up with a hammer and struck them in the face, police said. He ran off, but was later caught by police.

Both women were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and have now been upgraded to fair condition, police said.

Police said the women did not know the suspect and called it an “isolated incident.”

Westbrook, of the 400 block of East Ohio Street, is scheduled to appear in bond court Thursday.
