Julio Miramontes was among hundreds of people who waited in line for more than hour outside the Adidas store on Chicago’s Near North Side on Saturday to snag a pair of the new, limited-edition Yeezy Boost 350 sneakers affiliated with rapper Kanye West.

The black Yeezy Boost 350s were being sold Saturday only to those who had made online reservations for the shoes.

Miramontes was one of them.

“They’re sick,” said the 24-year-old from the city’s Southeast Side, who wore the gray version of the sneakers as he waited outside the store on Rush Street.. “They’re dope.”

Nolan Kim waited for an hour and half for the shoes. Why?

“I like Kanye,” the 32-year-old from Wheeling said. “I like his style, so I wanted his shoes.”

An employee said the Rush Street store had 300 reserved pairs, and he expected the $200 shoes to be sold out. He said the line to try to get them had started in the morning and continued through much of the afternoon.

Eric Alvarado, who was wearing his gray version of the shoes, which came out earlier this summer, said he wanted the black ones, too, because West “is a god.”

But the 19-year-old, visiting his hometown from New York, where he goes to college, said he planned to sell the black shoes online for about $1,900 “for tuition.”

On eBay, people already were trying to sell the new shoes Saturday for over $1,000.

Standing in line with Alvarado was Kevin McMaster, 29, a shoe collector from River North. He said he doesn’t care about the West branding. What mattered to him, he said, was that the shoes are comfortable and “rare and unique.”
