State child welfare officials are investigating allegations of neglect and abuse in the death of a 5-day-old baby Sunday in the South Shore neighborhood.

Johnathan T. Buckner Jr. was discovered unresponsive by his father at 6:05 a.m. Sunday at his home in the 7700 block of South Colfax, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Johnathan was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:43 a.m., authorities said.

The state Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of abuse and neglect against the baby’s parents, spokeswoman Veronica Resa said. The agency has not had prior contact with the family.

An autopsy Monday did not rule on the baby’s cause and manner of death, with results pending further investigation.

Area South detectives are conducting a death investigation.
