Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the government shutdown:

“Tonight, House Republicans voted to shut down the U.S. government, insisting on their partisan push to derail Obamacare.

“Tomorrow, Americans all across the country will feel the effects. National parks will be closed. Medical research grants won’t be made. People trying to sign up for veterans benefits, Medicare and Social Security will face delays. Law enforcement efforts will be hampered.

“Republicans should stop holding the American economy hostage and start governing responsibly. They should stop their fruitless and mean-spirited crusade to snatch much needed health care from millions of Americans. Their willingness to shut-down the government to get their way is the height of irresponsibility. It is time to fund the government, prevent a shutdown and turn our attention to the need to restore security and good jobs to our economy.”
