The White Sox claimed right-hander Tayron Guerrero off waivers from the Marlins on Friday.
The 6-8 Guerrero, 28, was designated for assignment Dec. 2 after posting a 6.26 ERA in 46 innings of relief. According to FanGraphs, his average fastball velocity of 99.4 led all major-league pitchers with a minimum of 40 innings, but he also issued 36 walks and allowed 42 hits.
Guerrero’s 52 relief appearances were tied for third on the Marlins. He has struggled to be effective in parts of three seasons with the Padres and Marlins, pitching to a 5.77 career ERA.
With the addition of Guerrero, the Sox’ 40-man roster increased to 37.
