Former attorney gets 30 years for soliciting murder of ex-wife

A former southwest suburban attorney has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for trying to hire someone to kill his ex-wife.

Robert Gold-Smith, 54, was found guilty of solicitation of murder for hire in March by Judge Daniel Rozak, according to the Will County state’s attorney’s office.

While in jail for aggravated domestic battery charges involving his ex-wife, Gold-Smith approached a fellow detainee at the Will County Adult Detention Facility and offered to pay him to kill his ex-wife, prosecutors said.

A recorded conversation between Gold-Smith and the detainee was played at the trial, prosecutors said. The detainee also testified against him.

Gold-Smith, of Frankfort, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

Another charge of communicating against a witness is still pending against Gold-Smith because he contacted the detainee indirectly and tried to sway his testimony, according to prosecutors. The domestic battery charges are also pending.
