A man was charged with a pair of burglaries Thursday morning in north suburban Evanston.

A 48-year-old woman called police at 6:05 a.m. after she heard a noise coming from her detached garage in the 1900 block of Wesley Avenue, according to a statement from Evanston police. Through her window, she could see a man entering the garage through an unlocked service door.

Officers arrived to see 20-year-old Tewayne T. Kennedy exiting the backyard and running away, police said. He was taken into custody in the front yard. Nothing was stolen from the garage.

About 5 a.m., a 21-year-old man living in an apartment in the 1100 block of Foster Street encountered a man matching Kennedy’s description in his apartment, according to police. The man told the resident that he was looking for someone but went to the wrong apartment before walking out with a tan backpack.

The resident called police about 8 a.m. after he learned that his roommate’s tan backpack – which contained the roommate’s iPhone, MacBook Air and wallet – was missing, police said. The phone was later tracked to Kennedy’s home in the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue, where police recovered the stolen backpack and its contents.

Kennedy was charged with a misdemeanor count of criminal trespass to land for the Wesley incident and a felony count of residential burglary for the Foster incident, police said.

He was held on a $60,000 bond and was expected to appear in court again Sept. 30, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.
