A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday on the Bishop Ford Freeway near south suburban Dolton.
Kristi L. Swopes, 37, was driving a silver 2012 Ford south on I-94 in the far left lane near 159th Street about 4:25 a.m. when she tried to move into the middle lane and the back passenger side of her car struck the front driver’s side of a maroon 2010 Chevrolet, according to Illinois State Police.
The Ford spun out of control, struck the concrete median and stopped between the left lane and the left shoulder, facing oncoming traffic, police said.
A silver 2004 Oldsmobile then struck the back of the Ford, causing the Oldsmobile to spin out of control, police said. As it spun, the Oldsmobile was struck by a red truck-tractor pulling a white semi-trailer.
The truck-tractor then struck Swopes, who was standing on the freeway, police said. The driver of the truck-tractor stopped briefly after the crash, then left the scene without providing any information.
Swopes, of the 300 block of Cornell Avenue in Calumet City, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:49 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The driver of the Oldsmobile, a 33-year-old Chicago woman, was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey with minor injuries, police said.
All southbound lanes of I-94 were closed until 8:30 a.m., police said.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information about the truck-tractor is asked to call Illinois State Police at (847) 294-4400.
