The Bears will sign Cardinals offensive tackle Bobby Massie, sources confirmed to the Sun-Times. The team announced Wednesday that Massie agreed to a three-year deal.
Massie, who is 6-6 and 316 pounds, has started 30 games in two years at right tackle for the Cardinals.
Sources indicated that the Bears have plans to move Kyle Long back to guard. A move was dependent on what happened in free agency. Long was moved to right tackle last season after two years at guard.
The Bears actively looked at free-agent offensive linemen, which included guard/tackle Jeff Allen, sources said. Allen agreed to a deal with the Texans.
Long has known Massie since high school when the two lived in Virginia and told ESPN 1000 he “couldn’t be happier” with the move. He was coy when asked about the switch.
“I don’t care where they put me,” Long said. “I’ll figure out a way to do it.”
He joked that nothing could be more uncomfortable than last year, when the Bears moved him to tackle days before the season opener.
At the NFL Scouting Combine, general manager Ryan Pace praised Long’s versatility. Pace said Long would be informed about his position after free agency and the draft.
“The thing about Kyle that we all love is his position flexibility,” Pace said. “With our offensive line, when I look at that, we’ve got some flexibility with some guys there. Our goal is to improve that position, but to just acquire the best players and let it all sort out and start the best five.”
