FINAL: Giants 6, Cubs 5; Cubs fall in 13 innings

Joe Panik hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 13th inning to keep the Giants’ postseason alive with a 6-5 win over the Cubs in Game 3 of the NLDS at AT&T Park.

The game ran 5 hours, 4 minutes.

Brandon Crawford led off the 13th inning with a double, then scored on Panik’s blast off the right-center field wall.

The Cubs used all but one pitcher in their bullpen and relied on Mike Montgomery for the last five. Montgomery finally cracked in the 13th.

After having the lead nearly the entire game, the Cubs’ bullpen broke down in the eighth inning and allowed three runs to give the Giants the lead.

Kris Bryant hit a two-run home run to tie the game in the ninth, Albert Almora made a game-saving diving catch and Montgomery did well for four innings. Those efforts went for nothing after the Giants’ back-to-back doubles to lead off the 13th.

Jake Arrieta had given the Cubs an early lead with a three-run home run in the second. The Cubs didn’t score again until Bryant’s homer in the ninth, and then had their next 13 batters retired into extra innings.

Top Thirteenth: The Cubs got their first baserunner of extra innings here in the 13th, but pinch hitter David Ross grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The play was reviewed for some time by umpires but ultimately upheld.

Javy Baez walked with one out, and Willson Contreras singled to put two on before Ross’s double play.

Mike Montgomery is returning to the mound for a fifth inning of relief to face the bottom third of San Francisco’s lineup.

Denard Span made a diving catch on a short fly off the bat of Albert Almora. The play was originally ruled a double but was challenged and quickly overturned for the second out of the inning.

The Giants have the heart of the order due up in the bottom of the 12th.

Bottom Eleventh: Mike Montgomery got out of a jam here in the 11th, forcing back-to-back groundouts to send this game to the 12th inning.

Joe Panik led off with a single, and he moved to second on Gregor Blanco’s sacrifice bunt.

With the game-winning run on second, Trevor Brown and Denard Span grounded out. Brown, a pinch hitter, was the Giants’ last available position player

Montgomery has given up one hit and one walk in three innings of work to keep the Cubs in this game. He’s due up third in the 12th.

Top Eleventh: Giants reliever Will Smith tossed a 1-2-3 inning to match Mike Montgomery’s 10th.

Kris Bryant, a triple shy of the cycle, struck out swinging to end the inning.

Montgomery will return to pitch a third inning against the bottom third of San Francisco’s lineup.

Bottom Tenth: Mike Montgomery pitched a 1-2-3 tenth to send this wild NLDS Game 3 into the 11th inning.

As the clock strikes 1 a.m. in Chicago, the Cubs are running out of pitchers. Montgomery has now thrown two innings, and he and C.J. Edwards are the only available Cubs relievers.

Will Smith is now on the mound for San Francisco.

Bottom Ninth: Albert Almora laid out for an incredible diving catch to rob Buster Posey of extra bases and quite possibly the game-winning run.

Almora then doubled off Brandon Belt at first base to end the inning.

The game is headed to extra innings now, and the Cubs will have some decisions to make with the bullpen. Mike Montgomery is still in the game, and C.J. Edwards is the only remaining reliever.

Top ninth: Kris Bryant tied the game 5-5 with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth off reliever Sergio Romo.

Dexter Fowler led off the inning with a walk after going to a full count.

Bryant came up and smacked Romo’s 0-1 pitch off the top of the wall in left and into the stands.

The Cubs went down in order after the homer, and the game is headed to the bottom of the ninth all tied up.

Due up for Giants: Span, Belt, Posey

Bottom Eighth: Conor Gillaspie hit a two-run triple in the eighth off Aroldis Chapman to give the Giants their first lead of the night and of the series.

Brandon Crawford followed with an RBI single to give the Giants a 5-3 lead.

The Cubs burned through four relievers in the inning, starting with Travis Wood, then Hector Rondon, Chapman and Justin Grimm.

Chapman came on with two on and nobody out and, after recording a strikeout, gave up three consecutive hits, beginning with the triple to Gillaspie.

The Cubs have the top of the order coming up to try to retake the lead.

Top Eighth: The Cubs came up with nothing again, this time against reliever Hunter Strickland.

They’ve put a runner on base in all but one inning this game and only scored in the third inning.

The Giants, with six outs potentially remaining in their season, will face Travis Wood to open the eighth.

Bottom Seventh: The Giants have their work cut out against the Cubs bullpen.

They entered this game having gone 32 1/3 innings without scoring a run against a Cubs reliever. The streak expanded to 33 1/3 innings thanks to Pedro Strop and Travis Wood.

Strop recorded the first two outs of the seventh, and Wood came in for the final out against red-hot Denard Span.

The Cubs also made a few defensive substitutes to help prevent the Giants from scoring, putting Jason Heyward in right and Willson Contreras behind the plate.

The Cubs are now six outs away from an NLDS sweep but could use a few insurance runs.

Top Seventh: Giants reliever Derek Law kept the Cubs off the scoreboard for a fifth consecutive inning.

Cubs fans are bracing for a nail-biting finish.

Kris Bryant recorded his first out of the night, striking out swinging to lead things off. He previous doubled, walked and singled. Anthony Rizzo, still seeking his first hit in this series, popped out to short.

Pedro Strop is coming in for the Cubs.

Bottom Sixth: Fatigue? What fatigue?

Jake Arrieta tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning, forcing groundouts to Conor Gillaspie, Brandon Crawford and Joe Panik.

He had some help from his defense, too. Javy Baez made a diving stop to his right on a harder grounder up the middle off the bat of Gillaspie. He got up and made an off-balance throw, which Anthony Rizzo grabbed on a short hop.

The play was reviewed, as it appeared Rizzo’s foot came off the bag, but was upheld.

Arrieta is at 97 pitches, so his day may be over. Mike Montgomery has been warming up for two innings.

Top Sixth: There seems to be a momentum shift taking place at AT&T Park.

Reliever Derek Law struck out Dexter Fowler with a runner in scoring position, and the fired-up Giants head to the plate needing just a run to tie the game up.

Jake Arrieta has thrown 85 pitches and is showing signs of fatigue. He’ll face the middle third of the Giants lineup in the bottom of the sixth.

Bottom Fifth: Brandon Belt hit a sacrifice fly to get another run back, cutting the Cubs’ lead to 3-2.

Despite an early three-run lead, the Cubs have squandered a few opportunities to score — a fact that could still come back to bite them.

Top Fifth: Madison Bumgarner tossed his first 1-2-3 inning to retire Jorge Soler, Ben Zobrist and Addison Russell in the fifth.

He’s due to lead off the bottom half of the inning, and with 101 pitches, his night figures to be over.

The Cubs have had seven hits — three for extra bases — a walk and a hit batsman against the Giants’ ace.

Bottom Fourth: Jake Arrieta kept the momentum going here in the fourth, giving up a harmless two out single before an inning-ending flyout from Gregor Blanco.

Arrieta is up to 69 pitches now, which means he may only have two innings left.

Madison Bumgarner ended the inning on deck, so he’ll be back in to face the Cubs to start the fifth.

Top Fourth: Madison Bumgarner is four innings and 85 pitches into this game and has yet to record a 1-2-3 inning.

Kris Bryant made sure of that with a two-out single. Anthony Rizzo, who has yet to record a hit this series, struck out to end the inning without any damage.

I guess that’s the beauty of these Cubs: They can have an MVP candidate disappear for a series (so far) and still be on track to sweep. Not bad.

Bottom Third: The Giants got a run back in the bottom of the third when Buster Posey hit a two-out single to score Denard Span.

It was Posey’s second single of the game against Jake Arrieta and cut the Cubs’ lead to 3-1.

Madison Bumgarner led off the inning with a groundout, meaning he’ll be back on the mound for San Francisco.

Top Third: The Cubs stranded two runners in the third but continue to chip away at Madison Bumgarner.

Ben Zobrist doubled for the third extra-base hit in as many innings. Addison Russell followed with a one-out single, but Bumgarner retired Javy Baez and Miguel Montero to end the inning.

The question now is this: Will Bumgarner even get an at-bat this game? He’s up to 68 pitches and is due to lead off next inning.

And here’s a fun fact from the FOX broadcast: This is the first postseason series since 1924 to feature two home runs by pitchers.

Bottom second: Jake Arrieta didn’t relax after hitting a three-run homer in the top half of the inning.

He came out every bit as focused here in the bottom of the second, forcing groundouts on Conor Gillaspie and Brandon Crawford. He walked Joe Panik but struck out Gregor Blanco to end the frame.

Madison Bumgarner, surely wanting the chance for revenge with two runners on, was left in the on-deck circle.

Top Second: Cubs starter Jake Arrieta hit a three-run home run in the top of the second to give the Cubs an early 3-0 lead.

It was the culmination of a terrific inning against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner, who is up to 51 pitches already. Bruce Bochy already has hi bullpen up.

Arrieta’s home run against Bumgarner was the first he’s ever allowed against a pitcher. It was the Cubs’ second home run by a pitcher in this series, following Travis Wood’s homer on Saturday.

Addison Russell was hit by a pitch after an eight-pitch at-bat, and Javy Baez hit an infield single following a nine-pitch at-bat. That set the table for Arrieta with two outs in the inning.

Dexter Fowler and Kris Bryant also reached with two outs, but both were left on base.

Bottom First: Jake Arrieta appears to have brought his A game tonight, and he surely knows he’ll need it against Madison Bumgarner.

Arrieta struck out the side in the first, all swinging, and allowed only a single to Hunter Pence.

It appears the pitcher’s duel we were all hoping for is indeed in store for us at AT&T Park.

Top First: Joe Maddon’s new-look lineup had its first chance to take advantage against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner in the first but came up empty.

Kris Bryant roped a double to left field and advanced to third on Anthony Rizzo’s groundout. Jorge Soler, making his first plate appearance this postseason, struck out swinging to end the inning.

Soler, a right-handed hitter, replaced Jason Heyward in the lineup.

Both the Cubs and Giants can feel good about the starter they have on the mound tonight.

Cubs starter Jake Arrieta is 4-2 with a 1.82 ERA in his career against San Francisco. Perhaps more importantly, he’s 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in his last two starts at AT&T Park.

Denard Span, Brandon Belt and Buster Posey have struggled against Arrieta, posting a combined .111 average against him.

Bumgarner, meanwhile, is 8-3 with a 2.09 ERA in 13 career postseason starts. His last outing was a four-hit shutout of the Mets in the NL Wild Card game.
