A list of the Chicago area victims of Sept. 11

This is a list of those from the Chicago area who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It originally appeared in print on Sept. 11, 2010.

This is a list of those from the Chicago area who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It originally appeared in print on Sept. 11, 2010.

Kathy Bantis, 44, of Chicago, was one of 295 Marsh & McLennan employees killed at the World Trade Center.

Jeffrey Collman, a flight attendant from Yorkville, died on American Flight 11, which hit the WTC.

Andrea Haberman, 25, of Chicago, was on her first business trip to her brokerage firm’s New York office.

Vanessa Kolpak, 21, who grew up in Lincolnwood, was working for an investment firm in the South Tower of WTC. She first called her mother to say she was safe, but that was before the second tower was hit.

Suzanne Kondratenko, 27, of Chicago, a management consultant for Keane Consulting Group, was on the 92nd floor of the WTC’s South Tower.

Darya Lin, 32, of Chicago and also a management consultant for Keane, was with Kondratenko. Colleague Mike Dunn had been with them.

Jeff Mladenik, 43, of Hinsdale, died aboard Flight 11 while on a trip for the Internet publishing company he led. He also was a pastor and father.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Patrick Murphy, 38, died with 183 others when American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon. The 1981 Marian Catholic High School graduate was a Reservist on a brief assignment at the Navy Command Center.

Christine Olender, 39, a native Chicagoan, was at work at her job as the assistant general manager of the Windows on the World restaurant atop the WTC.

Lt. Darin Pontell, 26, of Arlington Heights, died at the Pentagon, where he’d been assigned to the intelligence department.

Robert Rasmussen, 42, of Hinsdale, a financial consultant, was last seen trying to get out of the WTC’s South Tower.

Susan Sauer, 49, who lived in Chicago, was attending a meeting for her employer, Marsh Inc., at the WTC.

Navy Cmdr. Dan F. Shanower, 40, of Naperville, chief of naval operations intelligence plot, had begun gathering data on the World Trade Center attacks but was killed in the Pentagon crash.

Mari-Rae Sopper, 35, a Washington, D.C., lawyer and native of Palatine, died on Flight 77 on her way to new job as a gymnastics coach at a California university.

Mary Lenz Wieman, 43, a marketing executive at Aon Corp., died in the WTC. She grew up in Arlington Heights.
