13 years for Aurora man convicted as ‘habitual criminal’

(GENEVA) A west suburban man with a history of violent crimes and drug-related offenses was sentenced Wednesday after being convicted as an armed habitual criminal.

Antwon L. Dismuke, 40, of Aurora was sentenced to 13 years in prison for having a .44-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun that he obtained after it was used in a drive-by shooting in July 2009, according to a statement from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

Dismuke, most recently of the 1000 block of East New York Street in Aurora, had been convicted of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance in 2001, and aggravated discharge of a firearm in 1995, prosecutors said.

He served prison terms for both those crimes, which happened in Kane County, according to the statement.

Under state law, anyone possessing a firearm after being convicted of two or more drug-related or forcible felonies is deemed a habitual criminal.

State law requires Dismuke serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, the state’s attorney’s office said. He will receive credit for 1,357 days spent in the Kane County Jail.
