(BURNS HARBOR, Ind.) A Chicago man who tried to steal “several hundred dollars” worth of liquor from a northwest Indiana Meijer store never made it back to the city following a chase on I-94.

The incident about 5 p.m. at the Meijer store on U.S. 421, just south of U.S. 20 in Michigan City, Ind., according to Indiana State Police.

Four suspects “involved in the theft of alcohol valued at several hundred dollars” from the store attempted to get away in an orange Dodge Caliber, and were pursued by Michigan City police south on U.S. 421 and west on I-94, a statement from ISP said.

Michigan City officers contacted state police about 5:30 p.m. and they joined the chase near mile marker 34 between Michigan City and Chesterton. State troopers then deployed stop sticks near mile marker 21 near Portage, where the car was forced to stop but the suspects got out and ran, according to ISP.

The driver and one passenger were captured after a foot chase, while the others were arrested about an hour later by Burns Harbor police.

Roy C. Staples, 25, of Chicago, was charged with felony resisting arrest, according to ISP. Staples, the driver, and the other suspects will also face theft charges which are pending, state police said.

The men, 18 and 20, were in the 1800 block of West Monroe Street about 9:20 p.m. when two people got out of a light-colored sedan and fired shots. They were hospitalized in fair condition.
