(AURORA) An elderly man is in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street Wednesday morning in west suburban Aurora.

The 82-year-old apparently walked in front of a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice that was westbound on New York Street near Kendall Street at 7:25 a.m., according to a statement from Aurora police.

The driver of the car, a 24-year-old Aurora man, swerved left to avoid hitting the man but was unsuccessful, police said.

The elderly man remains in critical condition at an Aurora hospital early Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Police cited the driver for driving without proof of insurance.

The intersection was closed for investigation after the crash but reopened by 11 a.m.
