When it comes to coffee, Rahm Emanuel is an independent

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel loves his coffee, but you won’t see him hitting up a Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts.

Emanuel, in an interview with Crain’s Chicago Business, goes into detail about his caffeine addiction, while also giving his list of favorite coffee shops in Chicago. They include Cafe Jumping Bean in Pilsen, Kusanya Cafe in Englewood and Dark Matter Coffee in Humbolt Park.

“I hear about places and if I’m in the neighborhood, I’ll try it,” Emanuel told Crain’s.

But don’t try slipping any cream in his cup, because he takes it “straight black, always black.”

He said there’s reason he sticks to independent joints.

(Coffee houses) have a character in the neighborhood. Each one has their own thing. It’s like a brewmaster, he says, referring to beer joints. (He likes those, too.)

And yes, he’s addicted to caffeine.

“I get severe headaches if I don’t have it,” Emanuel told Crain’s. “But you’re not allowed on (Yom Kippur).”
