Steve McWhorter scored 21 points and Akeem Springs added 17 on 7-of-10 shooting to help Milwaukee beat UIC 71-60 on Thursday night at the Pavilion.
J.J. Panoske scored 14 and Matt Tiby had 11 points and nine rebounds for Milwaukee (11-16, 6-7 Horizon League).
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jay Harris gave UIC (7-21, 3-10) a 26-24 lead with three minutes left in the first half, but Milwaukee scored the final seven to take a 31-26 lead into halftime and never again trailed.
The Flames trailed by as many as 12 in the second half before Harris hit a 3 to make it 61-55 with 2:40 remaining.
McWhorter answered with a layup and, after Harris missed a 3 on the other end, a three-point play to spark an 8-0 run which gave Milwaukee a 69-55 lead with 46 seconds to play.
Harris led UIC with 27 points and Paris Burns added 12 and six assists.
Purdue 67, Indiana 63
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas combined for 32 points and 13 rebounds, leading Purdue to a 67-63 victory against Indiana.
Rapheal Davis gave Purdue the lead for keeps at 64-61 with back-to-back driving layups at the 1:21 mark and again with 36 seconds to play.
Hammons added two free throws to cap the scoring with 4.3 seconds left after Indiana’s Yogi Ferrell missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer with five seconds to go.
Davis finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Hammons added 20 points.
Haas had 12 points and nine rebounds for Purdue, which won in Bloomington for the first time since a 72-61 triumph on Feb. 23, 2011.
Ferrell led Indiana (18-9, 8-6) with 21 points. Troy Williams and James Blackmon, Jr. each added 14 for Indiana, which made only five 3-pointers after sinking 18 on Sunday against Minnesota.
Iowa 81, Rutgers 47
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Jarrod Uthoff scored 14 points and Iowa defeated Rutgers, 81-47.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for Iowa (16-10, 7-6 Big Ten), and is just the third win in its last eight games.
Iowa coach Fran McCaffery and his team have a favorable schedule down the stretch too, as just two of their final five opponents have a winning conference record.
The Scarlett Knights (10-17, 2-12) never really competed in what became their 10th-straight loss, a streak that started immediately after they, somehow, beat No. 4 Wisconsin, 67-62, at home in Piscataway.
Uthoff’s 14, on 5-of-9 shooting, led all scorers. Aaron White added another 13 with eight boards.
Rutgers had just two players score in double figures — Myles Mack had 11 and D.J. Foreman scored 10.
No. 16 Maryland 69, Nebraska 65
COLLEGE PARK, Md.— Melo Trimble scored 26 points, including a pair of pivotal 3-pointers down the stretch, and No. 16 Maryland squeezed past Nebraska 69-65 in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
Dez Wells and Jake Layman each scored 14 for the Terrapins (22-5, 10-4 Big Ten), who were locked in a tie game with 5:38 left before Trimble took over.
After Wells made two free throws, Trimble beat the shot clock with a jump shot from atop the key. The freshman guard connected again from beyond the arc with 2:18 remaining for a 62-54 lead.
That was just enough to provide Maryland with another close win. The Terrapins have won their last three games by a total of 11 points and are 8-0 in games decided by six points or fewer.
CS Bakersfield 64, Chicago State 51
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Javonte Maynor scored 21 points and Cal State Bakersfield ran away from Chicago State in the second half to score a 64-51 victory.
The Roadrunners (11-16, 6-5 Western Athletic Conference) held a five-point lead at intermission, and Maynor opened the second half by knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to bookend an 11-2 run that ballooned the lead to 39-25. Cortez Conners knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:03 left to make it a 16-point lead.
Maynor was 7 of 12 from the field, including 5 of 10 from beyond the arc. Conners was 5 of 7 from distance and finished with 17 points for Bakersfield, which collectively shot 23 of 46 from the field (50 percent) and 11 of 20 from beyond the arc.
Jawad Adekoya scored 15 points to lead Chicago State (6-21, 2-8), which shot just 36.5 percent from the field (19 of 52) and was 10 of 23 from distance.
