Ice or no ice, the coho come in on southern Lake Michigan.

Andy Mikos texted that his son A.J. caught the first coho of the season from shore at the Northwestern landfill Sunday afternoon. They also caught a small rainbow.

“It begins,’’ Mikos said.

Also on Sunday, Gary Bloom was ice fishing at Montrose Harbor and caught a brown trout at 7:45 a.m. then “the first coho of the season.’’ He saw two more small coho caught.

“The powerliners will soon be happy,’’ he emailed. “Coho dinner is Friday.’’

FOTW, the celebration of big fish and good stories around Chicago fishing, appears Wednesdays on the Sun-Times outdoors page.
