Police shot a man wielding a large kitchen knife early Monday in south suburban Posen.

About 2 a.m., officers responded to a domestic disturbance at an apartment building in the 14400 block of Sherman and were confronted by the knife-wielding man, according to a statement from Posen police.

Police repeatedly told the man to drop his weapon, but he refused and came toward officers, police said. Officers then opened fire and shot the man.

The man–whose name and age were not immediately available–was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. His condition was not available as of Monday morning.

A woman and her two children–ages 5 and 6–were inside the building at the time of the shooting but were unharmed, police said.

The investigation has been turned over to the Illinois State Police’s Public Integrity Task Force, which investigates whether police-involved shootings are justified, officials said.
