Muskie & big crappie, local waters: Fish of the Week

SHARE Muskie & big crappie, local waters: Fish of the Week

This week we celebrate the water where the fish came from almost as much as the FOTW themselves. But the fish–a big muskie and a big crappie–celebrate the variety around Chicago fishing.

Take the muskie Justin McCollum of Worth (top photo) caught from the Des Plaines River in DuPage County on a creek chub on 8-pound line on an Ugly Stik. He estimated it at 45 inches and under 20 pounds before he “released it so someone else can catch it one day.’’

That is just an unusual spot for a big muskie, or any muskie.

Or take the 2.5-pound, 16-inch crappie that Shaun Singleton of Chicago’s Northwest Side caught on a minnow from Maple Lake.

From public waters in northern Illinois that is a true monster.

FOTW, the celebration of big fish and good stories around Chicago fishing, appears Wednesdays on the Sun-Times outdoors page.
