The Chicago Police officer who shot 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier and neighbor Bettie Jones was on the force for three years, according to sources who identified the officer Tuesday.

Robert Rialmo shot the bat-wielding teen outside LeGrier’s father’s home in the 4700 block of West Erie on Dec. 26, the sources said. Jones, a neighbor who was at the front door of the building, was killed accidentally, police said.

Rialmo, who worked in the Harrison District on the West Side, was answering a call about a domestic dispute and was told LeGrier, an engineering student at Northern Illinois University, was threatening his father with a bat, officials said.

Rialmo did not want to discuss the case Tuesday night without his lawyer’s approval.

The families of LeGrier and Jones have both filed wrongful-death lawsuits.
