A 39-year-old woman was shot to death Wednesday afternoon in her home block in northwest Indiana.

Police responded to “a call for service” in the 4700 block of Delaware Street at 4:40 p.m. when they found the woman in the street with a gunshot wound to her face, according to a statement from the Gary Police Department.

April Bailey, of the 4700 block of Delaware Street, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:35 p.m. by the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Her death was ruled a homicide, authorities said.
