The controversial logo on Cleveland pitcher Cody Allen’s cap is to be the subject of a planned conversation between the MLB commissioner and Indians owner.

CLEVELAND – Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said on Wednesday he plans to meet with Indians owner Larry Dolan after the World Series to discuss the team’s controversial Chief Wahoo logo.

But whether that leads to a change from the widely criticized logo is anything but certain.

“I’ve talked to Mr. Dolan about this issue,” the commissioner said at Progressive Field before Game 2 of the World Series. “We’ve agreed away from the World Series, at an appropriate time, we will have a conversation about this. I want to understand fully what his view is, and we’ll go from there.”

Manfred would not say what potential action or changes might be made, or even advocated by the league. He did not directly answer the question of whether major league baseball was “OK with” the smiling, cartoon logo.

“I know that particular logo is offensive to some people,” Manfred said, “and all of us at major league baseball understand why. Logos are, however, primarily a local matter, and local clubs make decisions about [their] logos. Fans get attached to logos. They become part of a team’s history.

“So it’s not as easy as coming to the conclusion and realizing that the logo is offensive to some segment [of society].”
