Despite raiding the cupboard last year, the Cubs minor league system appears perfectly full this season. According to MLB.com, the Cubs have six players among the best 100 prospects in all of baseball.

The Cubs who made the list aren’t all as big of names as Kris Bryant or Addison Russell, but the pure quantity of worthwhile prospects should grab fans attention.

19-year-old shortstop Gleyber Torres topped the list for the Cubs, coming in at No. 28. He was joined in the top 50 by catcher Willson Contreras. Torres was one of 17 players to jump from off the list entirely into the top 50.

For the Cubs right now, it’s more about quantity than quality. Outside of Albert Almora and possibly Duane Underwood, both of which could see time in September, none of the prospects are expected to make an appearance for the Cubs this season.

According to Jonathan Mayo, the Cubs don’t rank among the top 10 minor league systems heading into the year, despite their high number of prospect.

With a lack of pitching prospects and a surplus of middle infielders and outfielders in both the minor and major leagues, the Cubs may be in a position to deal.

What makes the Cubs quick turnaround so impressive is the names on this same list last season. Since 2014, Kyle Schwarber, Jorge Soler, Russell and Bryant were all included on the prospect list.
