A man was fatally struck by a car Wednesday afternoon as he was crossing the street in west suburban Naperville.

Jeffrey Maxwell, 49, was walking east across South Washington Street at East Bailey Road about 1:20 p.m. when he was struck by a northbound red 2004 Lincoln LS, according to a statement from Naperville police.

Maxwell, of Naperville, was taken to Edward Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8 p.m., police said.

The driver was a 60-year-old Plainfield man, police said. It was not immediately known whether he was issued any charges or citations as the investigation is ongoing.
