A man who was found dead two weeks ago in the basement of a Back of the Yards neighborhood home on the South Side has been partially identified, but his cause of death remains unknown.

Officers were called to a home in the 4700 block of South Racine at 3:42 p.m. Jan. 20 for reports of an unresponsive person, according to Chicago Police. When they arrived, they found the body in the basement.

The man’s first name is Mario, but his last name and exact age remain unknown, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy did not rule on his cause and manner of death, with results pending further investigation.

The home appeared to be “unlivable” and was reported to the city’s Department of Buildings, police said.

There were no apparent signs of trauma to the man’s body, and detectives are conducting a death investigation, police said.
