It turns out that Tony Bennett — like a legion of others — is a fan of National Public Radio, and regularly tunes in when he’s on the road. In particular, the legendary crooner is a big admirer of the network’s veteran host, Chicago native Scott Simon, who has penned a number of books, including “Unforgettable,” his poignant tribute to his mother and fellow Chicagoan Patricia Simon Newman.
Bennett and Simon finally became acquainted in person, after the singer did a radio interview with Simon. That connection has led to a proposed joint book project — though the subject is still being kept under wraps. To work on the project, Simon is on leave from his show “Weekend Edition Saturday.”
Speaking of Bennett, he will again headline in our area this summer with his 32nd appearance at the Ravinia Festival on Aug. 13. Tickets go on sale to subscribers Thursday, and to the general public on April 26.
