NEW YORK – The White Sox recalled outfielder J.B. Shuck from AAA Charlotte and optioned right-handed pitcher Tommy Kahnle to Charlotte Monday before their game against the New York Mets.
With center fielder Austin Jackson sidelined by turf toe on his left foot, Shuck was inserted into the starting lineup batting fifth and playing center against Mets right-hander Matt Harvey as the Sox try to halt a six-game losing streak.
Shuck, 28, hit .299 with nine doubles, two triples, two home runs, 17 RBI, 11 walks and four stolen bases over 37 games with Charlotte. He made the Sox Opening Day roster and went 0-9 over four games before being optioned on April 18.
“With Austin, we don’t necessarily know if that’s DL worthy at this point,” manager Robin Ventura said. “We’re going to try to treat him today, see how well it is. We know he can’t go today, but we don’t necessarily want to lose him for two weeks right away. With J.B. coming up it gives you a chance to fill out that outfield spot with a left-handed bat.”
Kahnle, 26, made four appearances over three stints with the Sox, including one Saturday after closer David Robertson couldn’t protect a 7-1 lead in the ninth inning. It was one of three bullpen meltdowns in the Royals’ three-game sweep.
The mood in the visitors clubhouse at Citi Field was upbeat, especially considering the Sox’ current state. They’ve lost 14 of their last 18 games.
“As far as the character and the mettle, I like it,” Ventura said of his players. “I like that they come out and get after it. There’s no illusion. We have to get the lead and hold it. That’s going to happen. ”
