A man was shot Monday morning in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

At 5:15 a.m., the 56-year-old man was walking in the 200 block of North Central Avenue when someone approached him from behind with a gun, police said.

The man and the suspect fought over the gun, and a shot was fired. The man walked home, and called a cab to take him to the hospital when he realized he’d been shot, police said.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to the knee, and took himself to West Suburban Medical Center in good condition, police said.
