For most of the season, the Cubs inability to control base runners has been a major issue. Ace pitchers Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta have both struggled to prevent runners from taking an extra base.

However, Cubs catcher David Ross has quietly had a dominant year defensively.

Ross’ six pickoffs this season have far and away been his most in any one year. Before this season, Ross never had more than two pickoffs in any season.

Of course, some of the increase is due to the higher amount of attempts because of the pitching. Ross tallied his sixth pickoff Sunday against the Cardinals.

For all of his struggles, Lester recorded his second pickoff of the month, and third of the season, Sunday.
