A man has been sentenced to 71 years in prison for fatally shooting a 16-year-old Harper High School student and wounding a wheelchair-bound man as the two sat on an Englewood porch in 2012.
Antuan Joiner was 16 when he was charged as an adult with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder for the June 16, 2012 shooting that killed Shakaki Asphy, the Sun-Times reported previously.
He was convicted in October following a two-day bench trial before Judge Vincent Gaughan, court records show.
Joiner, now 18, of the 1300 block of West 77th Street, was sentenced on Dec. 12 to 45 years in prison for the murder charge, Cook County state’s attorney’s office spokesman Stephen Campbell said. Joiner was also sentenced to an additional 26 years for the attempted murder charges, for a total of 71 years in prison.
Asphy, a Harper High School student, was on the porch of a home in the 2000 block of West 70th Place with some friends about 7 p.m. that Saturday when someone in a gray hoodie ran through a gangway and opened fire, authorities said at the time.
Asphy was shot at least two times in the abdomen and later died, authorities said.
Brianna Goolsby, Asphy’s aunt, told the Sun-Times following her niece’s death that the teen loved basketball and played on a team at Harper. She would have been a junior in the fall.
Leon Cunningham — an 18-year-old who was in a wheelchair after having been paralyzed in another shooting a few years before — was shot in the leg in the attack, authorities said.
