Lane closures near the downtown Clark Street bridge start Friday and will last six weeks as crews begin work to repaint the bridge.

Painting should wrap up by Memorial Day weekend. The project is part of regular maintenance that helps extend the life of the bridge, the city’s Department of Transportation said.

The bridge carries one-way traffic southbound from River North over the Chicago River and into the Loop.

Come Friday, at least one lane and one sidewalk will be closed during the day as crews begin the painting project, transit officials said.

On Monday through Thursday nights, the entire bridge will be closed entirely to vehicles and pedestrians from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning, officials said.

The bridge will also be fully closed one weekend later this month, from 7 p.m. on Friday, April 24, to 6 a.m. on Monday, April 27.

During those times, a detour will take drivers to La Salle Street via Kinzie, the department said.
