A 27-year-old Elgin man was sentenced to five years in prison Friday for his role in a 2014 gang fight.

Jerome M. Murray, of the 200 block of Chaparral Circle, was sentenced to five years in prison for felony mob action, according to a statement from Elgin police. He pleaded guilty to the charge May 23.

About 8 p.m. Aug. 8, 2014, two of Murray’s fellow gang members got into an argument with two members of a rival gang when they were leaving a store in the 100 block of Kimball Street in Elgin, police said. His two friends left but later returned with Murray to the store, where they got into a fight.

No one was seriously injured, police said.

Murray received an extended prison term because of his extensive criminal history, police said. Since 2006, he has been convicted of three felonies and 15 misdemeanors.
